One of Camp Chef’s latest innovations, the SmokePro SG was developed based on customer feedback of previous pellet grills. As a result, it offers everything you would love in a pellet grill. From a smart smoke technology that gives you full control over cooking temperature that ranges between 160F and 500F, to Camp Chef’s very own patented ash cleanout system, this grill has it all. It is also the only other model aside from the SGX model to feature slide and grill technology.

The cleanout for both the pellets and ash is a huge perk to the grill.  The patented “Easy Ash Cleanout” does not require the user to take apart the grill.  Instead, they simply have to twist and dump the container.  The 18lb pellet hopper is similarly an easy cleanout.  The stainless steel also makes it easier to clean the grill because of the steel’s properties.
With a massive 700 square inches of primary grilling space, this grill impressed us when compared to other Pit Boss grills we reviewed. Its size is large enough to cook for large groups of people. It features a Flame Broiler that uses slide-plates which allow for direct flame grilling, which means you get an even cast-iron cooking each time. If the 700 square inches isn’t enough, you can make use of the additional upper cooking rack space. The racks are made of porcelain-coated cast iron for optimum grilling as well as easier maintenance.
Auger Making Weight Noises: It’s usually indicating a problem with the motor that’s responsible for rotating the augers. Under such circumstances, you would be left with no other choice than to replace the motor completely. Since the motors and augers are usually packaged together, this can get quite expensive. In such scenarios, it’s better to let it make noises and run for as long as it would serve you before going to replace it. However, once that problem occurs, you’d often find the auger not feeding the pellets at the expected rate and thus, the desired temperature might not be reached in some cases.
Another “set it and forget it” pellet grill, the Camp Chef allows you to set the temperature controls for up to a range of 500 degrees F, and leave it to do the regulating. With its efficient auto-dispensing pellet hopper and digital temperature controls, the pellet grill sets, maintains and adjusts the desired temperature for even cooking each time. With consistent and fuss-free temperature control, you’ll sure to have the most perfectly grilled foods.

This mid-sized pellet smoker is comparable in capacity to Traeger's popular Lil' Tex Elite, but much more sophisticated and easy to find for well below its list price. It's one of the few pellet smokers we've seen with an ash removal system. Although pellets don't create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain on most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn. Camp Chef's solution is a "trap door" under the fire pot. The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown upper left. You still have to clean out the bottom of the smoke box periodically, but you don't have to worry about a clogged firepot that could impair the smokers performance.

How many times do we get finished smoking things like steaks, chicken, etc. and we need to put a sear on something or crisp up the skin on the chicken or get some grill marks on the burgers or hotdogs? I don't know about you, but I usually fire up the grill or use the broiler in my oven to take care of these items that need a little extra something.
While you are grilling meat, it is great if you can take the guesswork out of getting everything cooked to perfection, especially when it comes to cooking steaks. With the supplied meat temperature probe, you can do just that so that whether you are cooking a steak to medium rare, or well done, you are able to check it as you cook it. The meat probe also prevents you from overcooking other food, which causes it to dry out, or worse, you end up burning it.
Tech geeks: A tech geek will also prefer a Pellet smoker grill and some of the latest grills including Green Mountain Grills came up with some exciting tech functionality like Wi-Fi! Just imagine, hanging with friends and monitoring your pork with your smartphone? You can increase and decrease temperature and control pellet feed without even touching the grill. This gives you the ability to cook while you work!

Are you ready for the awesomeness that is the new drip tray? With the pull of a knob, you can change your indirect heat drip tray to a direct wood fired flame mode. I also have the Sear Box accessory and think that is still the best way to git a nice crusty sear on a steak, but I love the options that the direct flame mode gives me. It’s incredibly versatile and adds a ton in terms of flavor.

While the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill is compatible with most iOS and Android devices, I want to stress, check the compatibility of your device with the grill before purchasing because it would suck to buy this grill only to find out that this feature is not compatible. Also, if you do not plan on using the grill on some elevated surface, the legs are not tall so the grill sits close to the ground. Regardless, this is a GREAT smoker: your meat will come out tender and juicy with that authentic BBQ taste we all love! Neither of these cons effect the quality of your BBQ and both can be worked around.

Before anything else, we will discuss what we found to be the best feature of the SmokePro SG – its grilling area. Offered in the form of an upper rack area of 382 square in and lower rack area of 429 square in, the SmokePro SG has a massive 811 square inches of grilling space. This number is matched only by its counterparts the LUX & SGX Camp Chef pellet grills, and surpassed by the SmokePro XXL. But, that is not the only part worth mentioning about this pellet grill. You know how an extra grilling rack can sometimes be more of a nuisance than a blessing by either, getting in the way, being hard to reach, or only performing a solitary function like just warming? Well, that is not something you will go through with the SmokePro SG.
Hey Jeff- thanks for the super job on the review of the CC Woodwind. I saw the video when it first came out- thot THAT would be a great grill someday and filed it mentally. SOMEday is here and I’ve looked everywhere and couldn’t find the “smoke god guy grill!” Then I just stumbled onto your blogs of reviews and reading your entire piece- I said THAT’s the one I want!! And when I clicked on buy now… and BAM!!! up pops the “smoke god guy!!!” Haha!!! Must be the one to get- double confirmation!!

The hopper is equipped with a drain to empty pellets if the grill will be stored for a long time or to change to a different wood. The drain chute is identical to the grease drain chute on the opposite side and one can hang a bucket on the chute to catch the pellets. The chute is opened via a pull out knob. Although there is a sliding vertical tab to hold the knob in place it cannot be effectively locked and easily popped open every time we removed the cover, sending pellets all over the deck. The problem was exacerbated by the tight fitting cover which was not designed to accommodate the large, optional Sear Box. We ended up taping the knob shut.
The chimney and chimney cap are bolted in position at the rear of the grill, although it should be noted that the height of the cap should be adjusted depending on the season. In summer the gap should be 1-1.5 inches and during winter months it should only be 1/2 inch. This helps control the heat within the grill when the lid is closed and keeps the wind from getting in and lowering temperatures.
The main grill area measures 19.5″ by 22″ so at the heart of your cooking area there is plenty of room for you to cook several different foods. In addition to this, there is a smoking/warming rack which adds a further 6″ by 24″ so in total you have a mammoth 570 square inches of cooking racks, so you can cater for even the biggest of family gatherings.
Camp Chef's tag line is "The way to cook outdoors".  They began in 1990 to address the cooking needs of campers, outdoors-men, and nature lovers. The initial product line grew to include patio cooking. The Camp Chef catalog is impressive and comprehensive. Grills, ovens and smokers are often integrally designed with add ons such as lidded grill boxes, griddles and their new pizza oven. They offer a vast array of cookware, tools and utensils, lanterns, firepits and other cooking items designed or adaptable to outdoor applications.

What makes the SmokePro XXL stand out is its large grilling capacity that comes second to none. The burn pot has enough room to house up to eight 21.5” x 14” racks, giving you a total grilling surface area of 2,408 sq. inches. This includes three jerky smoking racks, one hanging rack consisting of 12 sausage hooks, as well as four standard smoking racks.

You also have the option of running this grill on a 12V battery or a 110V battery. This gives you a lot of options when it comes to where you can use this grill: you can plug it into the cigarette lighter of your car, you can connect it the battery in the trunk of you car or you can use a standard plug. We were also surprised to find that this smoker will not drain your car battery, so use freely!
The Rec Tec smoker is the only smoker you will find on the market with Smart Grill Technology™ (notice the trademark)! It accurately maintains any temperature you set, from 180ºF to 500ºF, within a 5ºF range: forget a “Set and Forget” smoker, this is a “Set and Sleep” smoker! And while other smokers take 30-40 minutes to warm up and reach the desired temperature, I have seen this smoker take 20 minutes to reach 400ºF!
I have had a Traeger Junior Elite for 4 years. In that time I have used it < 50 times. I have replaced a fan motor, a fuse, and now I have been trying to get a thermometer replaced. First time, the service guy dropped the ball and never sent it. Second time- the thermometer got sent around to multiple post offices. Third time, never got to me- apparently they sent it to the wrong address. Fourth time- still waiting. It's been 5 weeks now, and I cannot get the part, and have no idea if the part will fix the grill. Everyone in service has been polite, but incompetent as well. I have had 2 flash fires in the grill from the auger pushing too many pellets into the hot pot, the temperature fluctuates wildly. Save yourself the frustration: avoid Traeger at all costs!
Everyone has a different standard when it comes to features. Some individuals will enjoy a modest grill without a million tech features, while others will want the best and brightest tech on the market. Of course, many will fall somewhere in between. Some of the features to keep an eye on that will make grilling easier include Wi-Fi, programmable meat probes, and direct grilling options.

This smoker offers a massive 560 cubic inches of grilling area with a large-capacity pellet hopper. Even though it’s the perfect starter grill, it’s still packed with plenty of extras that even the pro chefs will enjoy. If the grilling space isn’t enough, the removable upper racks can be turned into extra cooking space. The smokestack behind the unit can also be converted into a prep area.
Third, we’re experienced: We have burnt our foods and fingers; and while we were at it, we learned from our mistakes. In doing so, we’ve managed to become the best and mastered the art to perfection. So, we went through the same learning curves that you did or might do. So, we’re aware of the things that matter and we’re going to impart that knowledge with you, so that you don’t make the same mistakes as us.
However, with a pellet smoker, you can ensure that new pellets are being fed into the fire automatically, ensuring that it burns for longer and while it burns, it imparts with its flavors. It doesn’t need to be soaked and fed into a burning pile of coal to work. Above that, sawdust, when separated by the heat and being burned, gets a larger surface area to burn with and thus sends out a bigger burst of flavor per pellet.
Scott Thomas, the Original Grillin’ Fool, was sent off to college with a suitcase and a grill where he overcooked, undercooked and burned every piece of meat he could find. After thousands of failures, and quite a few successes, nearly two decades later he started a website to show step by step, picture by picture, foolproof instructions on how to make great things out of doors so that others don’t have to repeat the mistakes he’s made on the grill.
There are several types of grills and these are charcoal, gas, wood, electric smokers, open fire grill, and pellet grill. Each of them offers different benefits. In terms of comparison, pellet grill is still superior because it is the combination of all such grills. You can use it to smoke that way charcoal grill does. You enjoy the wood flavor of wood grill using pellets, and it is also electrically and electronically-operated.

Compared to the features, Daniel Boone’s price is quite reasonable. But with brands like Camp Chef and Traeger in the market, it has been difficult for GMG to take more than one spot in our top 10 list. Regardless, this is the best product GMG has to offer, having a balance between price, cooking space and features, bringing it to our honorable mentions list.

The first thing we have to understand is the anatomy of a pellet smoker. Check the related section on this page to get the idea. Once we know which part goes where, the bigger battle will be won. Next, we’re going to have to be able to analyze the problem if we are to solve it. What seems to be the issue? Are the pellets not lighting up? Are the pellets getting stuck and not working properly? Weird noises coming out from the hopper? Are foods not cooking well? Let’s take a look at these problems and how to solve them:
Traeger Junior Elite: The Traeger Junior Elite Wood Pellet Grill is another great alternative from a brand name company. However, you’ll find that with only 300 sq. in. of available space it’s a bit more compact. It does however come with a cover which might offset some of the cost of having to buy a separate meat thermometer if you want to go that route.
