Words like Grilling, Barbecuing and Smoking are often used interchangeably by us. However, when looking at them from a grill master’s point of view, there are some subtle methodological differences among these three: One is done with the lid up, BBQ is done in a closed circulation with the lid down, and smoking is a slow cooking process in a closed circulation.
One essential aspect to recognize is the fact that wood pellets used for pellet barbeque grills are different then those used for pellet stoves that many people use to heat their homes. Pellet bbq grills make use of hardwood pellets that do not have additives whilst those used in home heating normally include some other elements that are not created for human consumption.

As a high-end model, the SmokePro SGX offers all of the features found in both entry-level and mid-tier Camp Chef pellet grills. It’s equipped with the ash and hopper cleanout as well as a warming rack, side shelf, and Smart Smoke Technology. Besides the SmokePro SG, this pellet grill is the only other model that comes with Camp Chef’s Slide and Grill feature that allows you to transition seamlessly from open flame grilling to indirect barbecuing.

Are you sick and tired of bad BBQ? Well, so are your friends, neighbors, and family members. With the Woodwind woodfire pellet grill, mediocre grilling can be a thing of the past. Put the bland chicken and burnt steak behind you, and become the grill master you were born to be. With digital temperature control, this bbq grill does all the work for you. All you have to do is turn it on, set the temperature, and let it work while you play. Which means no more babysitting! The Woodwind pellet grill doesn’t just make grilling easier—it also makes it more delicious. This pellet grill is fueled by premium hardwood pellets to generate heat and smoke, infusing your food with a savory wood fire taste that’ll make your taste buds sing. With grill temperature settings from 160° F to 500° F and the included Sear Box that reaches up to 900° F, you can achieve perfect results, whether you’re grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, braising, barbecuing, or even searing. And when you’re finished cooking, cleanup is a breeze with the patented Ash Cleanout system. Discover the heavenly taste of a woodfire pellet grill with the Woodwind. Buy now to begin your journey to grill mastery.
Pellet Pro 680 – As its name implies, this pellet offers 680 square inches of cooking space. But, this still falls short of what the Woodwind has to offer with its included sear box. That being said, Pellet Pro 680 is a serious competitor. It is packed with features such as a precise PID temperature controller, 13-14 gauge steel body, meat probes, variable temperature settings, heat deflector, drip pan and free 100lb bags of pellets.
As we’ve already said temperature control is the key to getting a moist succulent piece of meat. This pellet smoker comes with a built-in thermostatic control with a digital thermometer, so you can exclude any guesswork while barbecuing. If the temperature sensors detect a drop-in temperature they feed more wood pellets into the burner. This allows you to place your meat on the grill and then let the smoker do the work while you relax.
I ordered the woodwind smoker with the sear box just a few days ago. I am very impressed with the smoker overall. Super fast shipping(two days!!!) and quality packing. Assembly was relatively fast and easy. Reverse seared rib eyes and burgers are fast and simple. Ribs going on today. My old recommendation would be hooks on the front for tools! There were a few loose fasteners on the lid and random unused rivets inside the body but easy fixes. Overall, high quality product. When are you going to integrate wifi into the control box?
Second on my priority list- the ash clean out and hopper clean out features. I use my pellet grills 4-5 times a week (sometimes more) and that means I spend quite a bit of time maintaining and cleaning my grills. Having the ability to pull a lever and clean out the remaining ash in the firepot without disassembling the entire unit is such a fantastic benefit. I still break the grill down to vacuum out excess ash in the body of the grill once a month or so, but I used to be doing that every other week. So, that one feature has cut my cleaning time in half. I love it. The hopper clean out feature is less crucial, but still great to have available. Basically, if your hopper is full of mesquite pellets because you just did a really bold steak but you want to swap pellets out for something more mild, like an apple or hickory, you can just open a little trap door and empty the hopper. Then it’s simply refilling the hopper with whatever type of pellets you want to use next. This is just an example of Camp Chef thinking through the grill from the perspective of a regular user. Great feature!

As is the case with all Camp Chef pellet grills, this one has a large 18lb hopper that provides enough fuel for hours of slow cooking or days worth of grilling endeavors. While this might seem like a long time to wait around before you can try out the new pellet flavor of the month, the SmokePro LUX ensures you do not have to. A hopper cleanout is put in place to allow you to change out pellets at any given time.
If you want to see some reviews from other Camp Chef owners and what they are doing with their grills, you should check out the Camp Chef Smoker Smokers group on Facebook. It’s not sponsored by Camp Chef or anything, just a group of lots of happy Camp Chef owners who are nice enough to answer questions and talk BBQ. It’s a great place to see these grills in action and hear what current customers are enjoying about their grills.  If you ever have any questions for me, you can drop a comment here, on the Hey Grill, Hey FB page, or in my closed FB group for BBQ and grilling enthusiasts (just send a request and I’ll approve you!) I’m always happy to help out!
Camp Chef has brought the world of slow smoked BBQ right to your back porch with the SmokePro SE Pellet Grill. Forget sweating over a fire pit for hours at a time—now you can set the desired cooking temperature and get on with your day. Camp Chef’s Smart Smoke Technology maintains a consistent temperature range to produce as much smoke as possible, giving your food a superior flavor. But what really sets this pellet grill apart from the rest is its quick and easy ash cleanout system. With just a pull of the lever, your fire pot will be ash-free and ready for the next cookout. Choose this pellet grill and see how Camp Chef can transform your backyard barbecue.
I bought a Woodwind, not from your recommendations I have smoked on it less that 10 times, bought July 2017, the last two times the smoker after 45 minutes loses temp and drops to under 100 degrees, went through shutdown procedures, started again same thing after 45 minutes loss heat at 275 degrees to under 100 so far not sure if it is worth the $900 spent, not happy looking at the other models now, maybe just stick to the barbecue!
Capable of producing ribs that are so tender that meat practically falls off the bone, we would say this Camp Chef pellet grill has it in the bag as far as performance is concerned. It uses an advanced digital temperature chip to keep not just temperature but also flow of smoke at a steady pace. This translates to juicy tender grilled meats and some of the best-flavored smoked meats out there.
Hey Michael! Great idea. I have both and love them both. I think they are really comparable in terms of functionality. The Woodwind’s sear box is glorious and I still use it all of the time to hit those super high temperatures. The SG wins in terms of size capacity, both in the pellet hopper and the internal grill space. I love the direct heat technology built into the drip tray and I’ve used it on everything from steaks to burgers and then closed it off for low and slow smoking on some chicken lollipops. Each grill kind of serves their own purpose, so I would think about what you’d be using your grill for most often.
All we could say is wow….we can certainly do better. And that, my fellow grilling enthusiasts, is exactly what this article will provide. An easy to understand, comprehensive comparison and review guide to every Camp Chef Pellet Grill. We’ll also take a look at each model individually and make recommendations for different budgets, cooking styles and available space.

The Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill was chosen as our second choice because it lacks some capabilities of the PG24.  The grill is rather heavy, at an overall weight of 146lbs.  The contrasts with the PG24 which is 124lbs.  The PG24 also contains a shutdown feature that gives the user more flexibility.  This allows the grill to do more of the cooking for you.  Lastly, the Woodwind pellet grill is more expensive then the PG24.  The PG24 is overall a better bang for your buck.

Enhance your back patio cookout with our revolutionary new SmokePro SG pellet grill featuring Slide and Grill Technology. Switch s...eamlessly between Indirect and Direct Flame mode to achieve 2 delicious flavor profiles all on 1 capable grill. The new SmokePro SG features a taller cook chamber with additional rack space as well as a larger capacity hopper for increased cooking space and eliminating the need to top off your grill with pellets mid-cook. Stocked with the patented Ash Cleanout System, stable temperature regulation, and dual meat probes, the SmokePro SG is the only pellet grill you need to achieve wood-fired flavor. Traeger TFB42LZBO Lil’Tex Elite Grill – For about $55 less, you can pick up this Traeger unit, which rivals Camp Chef’s Woodwind pellet grill when it comes grate construction. Its porcelain grates are not only easy to clean but also resistant to rust. Similar features to the Woodwind include caster wheels (but only two are included), an LED display, digital temperature controls, and automatic electronic ignition. Although it is the cheaper option, the grilling space is slightly smaller than the Camp Chef’s Woodwind model has to offer.
When you think of a portable smoker and grill, you think about basic features. But with the Tailgater by Traeger Grills, you get more than what most portable grills have to offer. At 300 sq. in., this portable grill is enough to cook decent and succulent dishes for small groups. It can even reach to a maximum 450 degrees F, so you’re never limited when it comes to the type of meat you want to grill or smoke. We loved its EZ fold legs, which make it easier to throw into the car trunk, ready for the next adventure.
Most mid to high tier Camp Chef pellet smokers have the hopper cleanout and purge feature. The woodwind follows this trend as well, allowing you to transition between differently flavored pellets with ease. All you have to do is open a little trap door to empty the hopper, so there is no need to go through the tedious task of changing fuel by hand.

This is Camp Chef’s version of the Flame Broiler system offered on most Pit Boss pellet smokers.  Like the Pit Boss system the SG has limitations.  The area over the pirepot is small so you can only sear one or two steaks at a time.  Additionally, while having access to direct flames is an improvement the temperature does not increase considerably.
This grill is not ideal for everyone, but it’s close for me. It’s my favorite grill of all the grills I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned a lot of grills from a lot of manufacturers. I wish it had WiFi connectivity. I’m not one who wants to be able to turn the cooker off and on with my phone, which means a hacker could do that too. I would just like to be able to monitor the temp from inside as well as set a threshold so the unit alerts me when my meat hits that temp.
Travelers: Hey travelers, we haven’t forgotten about making your life easier. Have you ever tried smoked rabbit while jungle camping? If so, then you know the thrill and enjoyment in it, but you probably wouldn’t go through the hassle of taking a smoker in the jungle. Wait a minute mate, I recommend the top pellet smoker grills for a successful camping adventure with friends or family. I cannot count how many times we have done seen the advantages of this. It makes for an awesome experience every time. We recommend pellet smokers because of the lightweight and easy to shift aspects. It can fit easily in your car, which makes it the travelers dream.
Auger Making Weight Noises: It’s usually indicating a problem with the motor that’s responsible for rotating the augers. Under such circumstances, you would be left with no other choice than to replace the motor completely. Since the motors and augers are usually packaged together, this can get quite expensive. In such scenarios, it’s better to let it make noises and run for as long as it would serve you before going to replace it. However, once that problem occurs, you’d often find the auger not feeding the pellets at the expected rate and thus, the desired temperature might not be reached in some cases.

Warm summer nights call out for a get together. The laughter of your loved ones and the smell of your favorite BB-Q in the air. This can be you and here at Grills forever we want to be the one that helps you find that perfect smoker grill that will make your party the best of the summer.Wood pellet smokers are some of the most popular smoker grills on the market. Part of the reason they are in such demand is because there are so many to choose from. With so many out there how do you know which one is right for you?

Due to having such features and being the best Lousiana Grills Product, the Louisiana Grills LG Pellet Grill 1100 could not escape our vigilant gaze when we did our research. However, it had some shortcomings, mainly due to its build and price that did not allow it to make it into our pellet smoker review. Regardless, we could compare it with some of our products that it had tied with. But as always, we could only choose the top 10 products for this review and this had to go. Regardless, this still is a great product, worth mentioning.

However, what sets it apart is its ability to allow for optional 15 degree temperature fluctuations. This “Hi Smoke” mode helps to obtain a maximum smoke profile. To achieve these temperature variations, the auger will move pellets in large group but less often. When compared to an even pellet feed, this produces a lot more smoke and imparts glorious BBQ perfection.

The Camp Chef PG24S uses three cleanup and maintenance systems. The Ash Cup Clean Out System collects leftover ash in a cup for easy cleanup. The Grease Management System instantly drains grease into a bucket for easy disposal. Finally, the Pellet Purge System helps you clean out pellets from your auger with ease. Cleaning up has never been so easy.

2 comments. I am smoking a Brisket using the woodwind for the first time today. It’s 97 Deb outside. I was hoping this grill would hold a tighter temp range. I’m averaging at best 210 to 240 with it set at 225. I dii like a less smokier neat so I didn’t use low smoke. Is \_ 15 deg sound right? Also both temp prope read over 300 and one was in a cold brisket and the other I just left in outside ambient temp. Do you think I have a bad controller?

Hi Craig- Happy New Year to you as well! On the sear box, I don’t use it on any setting other than High. When I am searing I am looking for the highest temperature I can get. I’ve used a laser infrared thermometer to measure the surface heat of my sear box grates and after preheating on high it was at 900 degrees F. If I’m looking for a lower temperature, I typically just use the pellet grill side on the highest heat setting.

Hey Jeff- thanks for the super job on the review of the CC Woodwind. I saw the video when it first came out- thot THAT would be a great grill someday and filed it mentally. SOMEday is here and I’ve looked everywhere and couldn’t find the “smoke god guy grill!” Then I just stumbled onto your blogs of reviews and reading your entire piece- I said THAT’s the one I want!! And when I clicked on buy now… and BAM!!! up pops the “smoke god guy!!!” Haha!!! Must be the one to get- double confirmation!!

You aren’t limited to basic barbecuing. For us, what really stood out was its ability to deliver pro chef-level cooking even at home. This smoker lets you explore all there is about cooking, letting you braise, grill, smoke, bake, roast, braise and BBQ all kinds of food. Using only the best and the purest hardwood pellets, you’re sure to have the juiciest and tastiest meats and vegetables every time you host your outdoor parties. If you think you have to give up quality because of the quantity of foods it can cook, that’s not the case. Quality is maintained whatever it is you’re cooking.

As a mid tier pellet grill, the SmokePro XT offers a great compromise between price and features with truly awe inspiring performance. However, since it’s release Camp Chef, now offers the SmokePro DLX which is an upgraded version with more features for a similar price. As such, you can pretty much skip this option unless and go straight to the DLX review unless you’ve found a great price.
As with all Camp Chef pellet grills, the XXL uses the patented Smart Smoke Technology to control and maintain heat output. At the push of a button, the automatic ignition will light up the burner pot but you must first fill the hopper with fuel in order to get a fire going. The temperature dial starts from as low as 150F to a high of 350F, plus you can opt for the Lo Smoke and Hi Smoke presets that automatically choose the grilling temperature for you.
Did or should I say tried a pork butt the next. The temp control went bonkers. At 225 the temp went less than 190 and up to 312. I switched to hi smoke. The smoke produced was beyond a lot it was crazy. I shut it down and finished the pork butt in the oven. Here is the good part. I am sure the controller is defective and called Camp Chef. They figured the probes were bad but just in case sent a controller with the probes no questions asked. Things should be fine for the weekend. Excellent customer service

The big plus with making good food with a wood pellet barbeque grill is the fact that the types of wood pellet that you choose to supply the barbecue with will supply various flavours allowing you to experiment with the several different types on the market to uncover your favorites. Widely used pellets include hickory, pecan, cherry, mesquite, apple and variety of additional flavours and blends.

The grill is plated with beautiful stainless steel that gives the grill a refined and impressive look. The huge cooking area includes 570 square inches of surface area. That’s enough to hold 20 burgers or 4 rib racks! It also contains a second warming rack and bottom shelf that provides the grill stability and extra storage. This version comes with a sear box that can reach temperature of up to 900 degrees Fahrenheit, which caramelizes your food. There’s a cheaper version without a sear box that costs around $200 less if a sear box isn’t a necessity for you. Additionally, the legs are built with extreme thickness giving the grill a grounded base. The caster wheels add portability to the grill so you can find that perfect place in the backyard.
Every outdoor cooking enthusiast wants an affordable pellet smoker that has all of the key features that even a high-end unit would have. In most cases, this is just a dream and a result of false advertising, because most impressive smokers typically cost a hefty sum of money. The Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker claims to be a reasonably-priced smoker that offers top-of-the-line features, and many users have agreed with those claims. With this pellet smoker review of the Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker, we’ll find out if it really does what it claims to do.
Bonus features- the upper shelf, the included thermometer probe, and the stainless kit. I totally understand the benefit of having an included secondary shelf in the grill. It’s awesome for things like hot dogs, stuffed mushrooms, etc. but I don’t use it a ton and sometimes have to remove it before doing taller things like turkeys, beer can chickens, hams, prime ribs, etc. I’m glad it is there for when I do need it and love that it’s removable for when I don’t. The built in thermometer probe is a super cool feature, allowing you to check the temperature of the meats on the grill with a push of a button on the control panel. Internal meat temperature monitoring is a huge deal and can contribute to a way better grilling experience, but I am a collector of thermometers (seriously, I have at least 10) so this wasn’t a make or break it feature for me. If you don’t have a thermometer, this is a sweet little bonus! Finally, the stainless kit. It looks pretty, It matches the sear box. People love stainless. For me, I find stainless steel is just a little harder to keep clean than a black grill. This is basically just my OCD self not wanting to scrub for fingerprints or water spots every time I use it. So, if you like stainless? You’ll love it. The thing looks slick, no doubt.

Pellet smokers can be used as a charcoal grill by adding the lit charcoal into the charcoal tray. Some of the best pellet smokers allow users to attach a propane tank to the stove to convert them into a gas grill or a kitchen oven. With a flat-top accessory, it can even be used as a griddle. A pellet smoker is an all-in-one solution for the hardened grill masters.

Temperature was very even from left to right with actual temps staying very close to set temps. Cranked all the way to high DLX ran about 480° F. The included meat probe is a great convenience you'll get accustomed to right away. Once smoking began, we just set the controller display to the meat probe and observed progress through the kitchen window.
