2 comments. I am smoking a Brisket using the woodwind for the first time today. It’s 97 Deb outside. I was hoping this grill would hold a tighter temp range. I’m averaging at best 210 to 240 with it set at 225. I dii like a less smokier neat so I didn’t use low smoke. Is \_ 15 deg sound right? Also both temp prope read over 300 and one was in a cold brisket and the other I just left in outside ambient temp. Do you think I have a bad controller?
The Camp Chef Woodwind SG model has a 22 pound hopper, 811 square inches of cooking space (more than the REC TEC), a chute that allows you to easily remove your pellets from the hopper for changing flavors, and 2 full-size cooking racks. It also has a knob on the left side that allows you to pull the flame deflector out of the way so the fire can shoot up closer to the rack giving you the ability to get a little char on something. As if this is not enough, it comes standard with a propane searbox attached to the right side where you can sear steaks, burgers, chicken, whatever you like, at around 900°F.
The Traeger Lil-Tex 22 Wood Pellet Smoker and Grill impressed us the most with its “6-in-1” feature, which lets you braise, smoke, grill, braise, roast and BBQ all kinds of foods. With porcelain-coated racks, this durable grill offers top-grade function that you’d expect from high-quality pellet smoker grills. The smoker features 418 sq. in. of cooking area, enough to cook for medium-sized groups. But if that isn’t enough, other sizes are available, all offering the same functions. It comes with digital temperature controls, so you can leave it to take care of the rest while you relax and play. This durable pellet grill is 2nd not because it’s not as great as our first pick –the grill is a bit more costly that’s all.
With a large cooking space and the most advanced cooking techniques, this is easily one of our favorite products among our top ten. While it lacks some of the features that the other grills and smokers in this review have (such as an ash and grease cleanup systems), it does deliver fine-dining quality foods, which is the ultimate goal of every grilling enthusiast. For its price, it offers some of the best features you can find in high-end products.
Rec Tec has always been known for making advanced Rec Tec wood pellet grills coming in at a higher price. However, some of the popular models come in smaller sizes, like Trailblazer 340 or Bullseye 380. However, compared to their capacities and features, the products in our top ten lists would be better choices. So, among its products, the RecTec Bull 700 is the only one that falls in our Honorable Mentions.
However, what sets it apart is its ability to allow for optional 15 degree temperature fluctuations. This “Hi Smoke” mode helps to obtain a maximum smoke profile. To achieve these temperature variations, the auger will move pellets in large group but less often. When compared to an even pellet feed, this produces a lot more smoke and imparts glorious BBQ perfection.
I id not purchase this item from Amazon, a local retailer had them on sale but none the less this a great smoker at any cost. I have compared it to the far more expensive smokers and I have found that this one has a much stronger, better built main body. The metal is of a heavier gauge of steel. Cheap smokers are separated from more expensive ones a lot by the electronic controls. Tis model has a control from 160 degrees up to 500 in 25 degree increments. It maintains a constant temp within a few degrees of where it has been set, always a problem on other smokers not of the pellet design I have used. Pellet consumption is modest and the Camp Chef brand pellets are the cheapest I have found. and work extremely well The ash cleaning system is a matter of dumping a cup after use with very little ash left over. The grease trap system is perfect. I see no reason to spend more for a pellet smoker that couldn't perform any better than this one. I would recommend it to anyone in the market for one. They are a set it and forget way to do your smoking.
Although pellet smokers already have their own custom-made wood pellets with different flavor and blends, if you choose to moonlight your smoker as a charcoal smoker for some reason (maybe for a different experience or a cooking experiment), you can use it as a regular smoker using wood chips. Under such circumstances, it’s going to be worth learning a bit about the types of wood chips out there.
It’s time for a Woodwind Pellet Grill Review! I’ve been cooking on my Woodwind for over 2 months now and thought it was time to give you guys an in-depth look at the newest pellet smoker in the Camp Chef line-up. You all know I’m proudly sponsored by Camp Chef because after using their products side by side with my other pellet grills, I knew I had found a brand I was eager to share with my readers and felt confident promoting. Camp Chef sent me the Woodwind to try out and to review and they specifically asked me to be completely honest-the good the bad, all of it. So here goes!
The Woodwind with Sear Box is the second option that Camp Chef gives you for searing steaks. The Sear Box on the Woodwind is a 16,000 BTU/hr propane fired burner capable of reaching temperatures of 900F. The Sear Box is a searing beast that will give audacious grill marks and caramelized crusts. The downside of the Sear Station is that you need a separate propane tank.

Most old-timers will tell you that a buildup of soot and grease will improve the taste of your food. This does not prove true, in fact, it’s not good for you and can even be dangerous. At Grills Forever we want your grilling experience to be the best and safe. Therefore, before any cooking session, always clean your grill to optimize its performance and prevent any off-flavors. Check the grease pans or collectors before smoking because the collector could be full and overflow, starting a fire. If there is a grease chute then clean it for sure.
Camp Chef made a great Woodwind video that is entertaining and informative, particularly for those who are thinking about joining the pellet smoker revolution. The video is fun, flashy and factual - you really can smoke, bake and grill anything on Woodwind effortlessly. If you already have a grill capable of high temp searing, Woodwind is available without the Sear Box for about $200 less than our posted MSRP below.
Camp Chef Pellet Grill and Smoker was designed purposely to suit home grillers through the inclusion of some unique features to make the grilling process much easier. It is equipped with a digital temperature display which eliminates the need for guesswork as witnessed in the typical grills. This has been made possible through the stainless-steel probe which measures the internal temperature of food as it cooks.
This is a wood pellet-fueled grill which is used to cook meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables for BBQs and outdoor parties. It is housed on a wheeled cart, and the component parts are a pellet hopper, main grill, and a side searing box which is fueled by propane. Its primary mission is to cook BBQ food with traditional wood infused flavors, but it has controls make it easier to control temperatures and cooking times than normal wood smoke grills. A basic version which does not have the sear box is available.

Did or should I say tried a pork butt the next. The temp control went bonkers. At 225 the temp went less than 190 and up to 312. I switched to hi smoke. The smoke produced was beyond a lot it was crazy. I shut it down and finished the pork butt in the oven. Here is the good part. I am sure the controller is defective and called Camp Chef. They figured the probes were bad but just in case sent a controller with the probes no questions asked. Things should be fine for the weekend. Excellent customer service
Are you ready for the awesomeness that is the new drip tray? With the pull of a knob, you can change your indirect heat drip tray to a direct wood fired flame mode. I also have the Sear Box accessory and think that is still the best way to git a nice crusty sear on a steak, but I love the options that the direct flame mode gives me. It’s incredibly versatile and adds a ton in terms of flavor.
We love recommending and reviewing wood pellet smoker grills, but we also want you to get the most out of them once you purchase. Without proper care and maintenance, even the best pellet smoker is bound to have a shorter lifespan. Therefore, how you use your smoker and how you maintain it after use greatly determines how long it will serve you. A little bit of work will go a long way to extending the life of your smoker. A thorough cleaning of the smoker should occur at least once a year. If you frequently use it, you should have it done at least three times a year. Buying quality pellets will extend its life as well.
Got my Camp Chef Smoke Pro SE four days ago. My son and I put it together, it is a two person job because it's heavy. Seasoned it and smoked two chickens that turned out awesome! Today I have hamburgers on. Smoking on low smoke for half an hour, take them off and crank it to 450 put em back on and grill till done. Easy to use. Very happy so far. Just hoping it holds up!
