This is Camp Chef’s version of the Flame Broiler system offered on most Pit Boss pellet smokers.  Like the Pit Boss system the SG has limitations.  The area over the pirepot is small so you can only sear one or two steaks at a time.  Additionally, while having access to direct flames is an improvement the temperature does not increase considerably.

All pellet smokers accumulate ash, which must be removed at some point to allow for good combustion in the burner pot. This task can be messy and cumbersome but the Woodwind pellet grill makes cleaning so much easier with its Ash Cleanout System. The ash removal lever is found under the firepot, and all you have to do is simply pull it to clean out your pellet grill.


The flame broiler uses a digitally controlled burn system. Its Digital Control Center lets you set the temperature ranging from 170F to 600F with ease. The desired temperature is set and maintained through an electric auto-start and fan-forced air mechanism. These, in addition, give that flavorful smoky taste to all of your foods. The auger automatically feeds pellets into the smoker, so you can pretty much let it take care of everything.

Second on my priority list- the ash clean out and hopper clean out features. I use my pellet grills 4-5 times a week (sometimes more) and that means I spend quite a bit of time maintaining and cleaning my grills. Having the ability to pull a lever and clean out the remaining ash in the firepot without disassembling the entire unit is such a fantastic benefit. I still break the grill down to vacuum out excess ash in the body of the grill once a month or so, but I used to be doing that every other week. So, that one feature has cut my cleaning time in half. I love it. The hopper clean out feature is less crucial, but still great to have available. Basically, if your hopper is full of mesquite pellets because you just did a really bold steak but you want to swap pellets out for something more mild, like an apple or hickory, you can just open a little trap door and empty the hopper. Then it’s simply refilling the hopper with whatever type of pellets you want to use next. This is just an example of Camp Chef thinking through the grill from the perspective of a regular user. Temperature was very even from left to right with actual temps staying very close to set temps. Cranked all the way to high DLX ran about 480° F. The included meat probe is a great convenience you'll get accustomed to right away. Once smoking began, we just set the controller display to the meat probe and observed progress through the kitchen window.

Second note about the new drip tray, please be cautious. Any time you have direct access to a fire and fat in your food you run the risk of a flare up. If you have anything that is exceptionally fatty and that has dripped on the drip tray, clean it thoroughly before opening the direct heat access. I grilled up some fatty rib eyes and had absolutely no problem, but it’s just something to keep an eye on. It’s always a good idea to clean your grill well before grilling anyways, this is just an extra reminder.
How many times do we get finished smoking things like steaks, chicken, etc. and we need to put a sear on something or crisp up the skin on the chicken or get some grill marks on the burgers or hotdogs? Food not cooking evenly or at desired times: It’s worth checking out the health of the fans in your pellet grill. Usually, if the fan is unable to distribute the heat properly throughout the whole smoker, these problems occur. Fans are relatively inexpensive and very easy to replace. Even if you see the fan working and still getting these problems, it might be that the fan is working intermittently or at slower speeds that it needs to. Have it replaced: it would be the best course of action and won’t be heavy on your wallet.

We love recommending and reviewing wood pellet smoker grills, but we also want you to get the most out of them once you purchase. Without proper care and maintenance, even the best pellet smoker is bound to have a shorter lifespan. Therefore, how you use your smoker and how you maintain it after use greatly determines how long it will serve you. A little bit of work will go a long way toward extending the life of your smoker. A thorough cleaning of the smoker should occur at least once a year. If you frequently use it, you should have it done at least three times a year. Buying quality pellets will extend its life as well.


As a part purchaser of your rub recipe, I’m a fan. But I have to disagree about one thing. I recently purchased a Traeger Bronson. Assembly wasn’t more than fifteen minutes, including the optional add-on front shelf And believe me, and I’m no Handy Andy. Counting initial “seasoning” smoking, I’ve smoked over 30 hours on it and haven’t had to empty the ash cup once. The “shutdown” setting totally incinerates any remaining pellets. This has shocked me. Now I won’t debate any of the subjective matters, as they are, well, subjective. But as an objective observation, I can say that I haven’t had to remove a single flake of ash out of the cup. None. Zero. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
Traeger Junior Elite: The Traeger Junior Elite Wood Pellet Grill is another great alternative from a brand name company. However, you’ll find that with only 300 sq. in. of available space it’s quite compact. It does however come with a cover which might offset some of the cost of having to buy a separate meat thermometer if you want to go that route.
The souped up Ortech style, notched dial controller not only provides thermostatic, set it and forget it cooking, but also has a dual LED readout that toggles between your set cooking temp and internal meat temp monitored by a stainless steel meat probe included with the unit. In addition to notched temp settings of 175F to 400F degrees, the controller has "Shutdown", "Feed", "High", "Lo Smoke", and "Hi Smoke" options. Our temperature tests indicated Lo Smoke temp is about 175 and Hi Smoke about 210. So what's the big difference between 175 and lo smoke, and 225 and hi smoke? Camp Chef says there are slight differences in the settings, mostly in the auger timing. In the 2 smoke settings the auger allows pellets to smolder more than burn.

I have been looking at pellet grills for a long time and finally decided on this Camp Chef Smoke Pro. I couldn't be more happy with my decision to buy this grill. Honestly, the results are in the food and I have yet to screw anything up on this. It is so simple. A couple of the features I liked are the low and high smoke settings. These settings produce lots of smoke to add lots of flavor to whatever you are cooking. Don't get me wrong the other settings all produce plenty of smoke but I've found most the time I end up just using low or high smoke because it's simple and it works. The other feature that I would not give up is the burner cleanout. Honestly, after having this I wouldn't buy another grill that didn't have the cleanout. On top of that this thing is built solid and assembled easily. If you've been considering getting a pellet grill go with this one. You will be happy you did. So will the wife, kids, friends, neighbors and if you're lucky a couple of new girlfriends!!! The only negative is that now there is no reason to go out to dinner any more. I can make way better smoked food at home.
