It has a cooking area of 800 sq. inches and a hopper capacity of 20lbs. While that just would be fine for regular smoking, this product needs some supervision and pellet refilling for longer smoking sessions. It does not have a Wi-Fi enabled control system, though it does come with a digital control system to provide you some ease of control while cooking with this product.
Once assembled it is a freestanding cart-type grill, and thanks to wheels, you can easily move the grill to wherever you want it stored when not in use, or to the best location for the days when you are cooking with it. A point of note is that the ignition and controls are electric so wherever you plan to use the grill there will need to be an electrical supply located nearby. If none is available, you will need to run an extension lead from an electrical socket in your home or garage.

Let’s start with the obvious… the size!! Compared to the DLX, this SG has a massive amount of grill grate real estate. Not only is there a larger main grill surface, there is also an included split second rack that doubles the usable grill space. Most grills offer a second warming rack, but it goes unused because it either doesn’t get enough heat or it simply gets in the way. The second rack on the SG totally solves both of those problems.

The versatility of the grill allows you to prepare all of your favorite dishes to your specifications. The hardwood pellets bring out natural and juicy flavors of your food. Additionally, the grill uses convection heating that circulates the burning pellets throughout the grill. The combination of these techniques draws out the best flavors and gives your meat the perfect cook.

This mid-sized pellet smoker is comparable in capacity to Traeger's popular Lil' Tex Elite, but much more sophisticated and easy to find for well below its list price. It's one of the few pellet smokers we've seen with an ash removal system. Although pellets don't create much ash, they need regular cleaning, which is a pain on most other designs because the greasy grates and drip pan must be removed to get at the fire pot where the pellets burn. Camp Chef's solution is a "trap door" under the fire pot. The bottom slides back letting ash drop into a removable cup, shown below.
Let’s chat about included features. Almost all pellet grills operate with a similar mechanism where an electrically powered auger feeds wood pellets into a firebox. The pellets are then ignited, producing smoke and heat. The Woodwind has consistently operated as advertised, every time I’ve used it, from the day I opened it. So what features really set it apart?
With that being said, it’s necessary to understand how much wood pellet would last you and for how long. A 40-pound bag of wood pellets would last you for approximately 24 hours if burned at 250 F. Therefore, if you’re trying to slow-cook a large piece of brisket for 14 hours straight, your 6-9 lb hopper capacity just won’t cut it. You’re going to have to refill it in the middle if you wanted to continue cooking.
At Grills Forever, we work hard to bring you the best product reviews possible through an extensive online research process. We go through countless online reviews and browse through different brands, both known and unknown. We then go through their features and the value they can provide to the users. We shortlist the top products to do physical testing and then come up with a review. We do this on a regular basis to keep our list up-to-date.

I ordered the woodwind smoker with the sear box just a few days ago. I am very impressed with the smoker overall. Super fast shipping(two days!!!) and quality packing. Assembly was relatively fast and easy. Reverse seared rib eyes and burgers are fast and simple. Ribs going on today. My old recommendation would be hooks on the front for tools! There were a few loose fasteners on the lid and random unused rivets inside the body but easy fixes. Overall, high quality product. When are you going to integrate wifi into the control box?

Are you considering the purchase of a pellet smoker? Do you want to know a bit more about how to choose the right one for your needs? If so, you’ve come to the right place. This article breaks down what pellet smokers are, as well as what you should look for when purchasing one. We’ll also be providing you with a list of our favorite pellet smokers on the market today!
Its 570 square inch grilling area is very much similar to what you would find on mid-tier options like the Smoke Pro DLX and XT. Although this is a bit smaller than what we expected to see in a top-tier pellet smoker, the Woodwind offers almost all the features that have become synonymous with Camp Chef pellet grills. This includes the LED temperature readout, Smart Smoke Technology, dual thermometer probes, an automated auger, warming rack, side shelf, bottom utility shelf, as well as ash and hopper clean out. A grease management system has been added to boot so that you don’t have to deal with grime when it comes to cleaning your pellet grill.
The Woodwind Classic with Sear Box doesn’t just make grilling easier—it also makes it more delicious. Your pellet grill is fueled by premium hardwood pellets that generate heat and smoke, infusing your food with a savory wood fire taste. The included propane fueled Sear Box mounts perfectly on the side of your grill creating flawless sear marks on just about anything. And when you’re finished cooking, cleanup is a breeze with our patented Ash Cleanout system.
Now comes the best part about pellet smokers: they can conveniently do all these three. Coming with a large cooking space and a lid, the top rated pellet smokers would allow you to keep them open or closed, depending on what results you are looking for. With a dedicated space for putting your charcoal, you can use it as a charcoal grill, smoker or a barbecue. Or you can use it like a kitchen oven using the direct fire from the firepot. Finally, it does what it was made for – pellet smoking. Using small hardwood pellets running over the firepot in a corner, this smoker uses a fan to distribute the heat and smoke throughout the grilling area. This indirect heat ensures that the food is slow-cooked and smoked over long periods of time.
The Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett smoker lets you get more than what you paid for. At a surprisingly low price, you get to have tons of great features that are sure to elevate your BBQ experience. For its price, we were quite surprised to see that it satisfied most of the features on our review. We tested over fifty products, and even the expensive ones were no match for this product. In terms of value per dollar, this product deserves the top spot.
GrillGrates(TM) amplify heat, prevent flareups, make flipping foods easier, keep small foods from committing suicide, kill hotspots, are easier to clean, flip over to make a fine griddle, and can be easily removed and moved from one grill to another. You can even throw wood chips, pellets, or sawdust between the rails and deliver a quick burst of smoke to whatever is above. Every gas grill needs them.
I wouldn’t worry too much about that variation in temperature. It seems a little bigger than others, but it could be due to a number of things (type of pellets, height of vent on your smoke stack) and may not be a controller issue. For the probe temperatures, I’d give customer service a call. You might have a kinked or faulty probe that they would be happy to replace.
Every outdoor cooking enthusiast wants an affordable pellet smoker that has all of the key features that even a high-end unit would have. In most cases, this is just a dream and a result of false advertising, because most impressive smokers typically cost a hefty sum of money. The Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker claims to be a reasonably-priced smoker that offers top-of-the-line features, and many users have agreed with those claims. With this pellet smoker review of the Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker, we’ll find out if it really does what it claims to do.

As with all Camp Chef pellet grills, the XXL uses the patented Smart Smoke Technology to control and maintain heat output. At the push of a button, the automatic ignition will light up the burner pot but you must first fill the hopper with fuel in order to get a fire going. The temperature dial starts from as low as 150F to a high of 350F, plus you can opt for the Lo Smoke and Hi Smoke presets that automatically choose the grilling temperature for you.
Typically, most portable grills would give up certain features just to maintain their portability, but this wood pellet grill from Traeger actually had more than what other top grills have to offer. Out of all of our features, it managed to tick 85% off the review. Its digital controls, versatile cooking features, and decent cooking space (perfect for outdoor adventures) all make it our best portable pick.
When you invite friends and family for a barbecue you want to cook the best food possible. At the heart of ensuring your steaks, chicken, and ribs, are cooked to perfection is your grill, which can be the difference between a hit BBQ or a phone call to the local takeaway for a delivery. Forget that call and consider cooking with the Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Grill with Sear Box, which lets you roast, bake, grill, smoke, braise, and sear to perfection. But it also has lots more to offer as you are about to find out.
Pellet Pro Deluxe 770 – With 770square inches of rack space, this Pellet Pro unit is not as large as the SmokePro SGX when it comes to cooking space but its 35lb hopper is quite big. Its push button digital temperature controls are much more intuitive than the twist dial found on most Camp Chef units. Still, this unit lacks some of the innovative features that the SmokePro SGX offers.

This unit will not let even a single pellet go to waste. No need of worrying whether you’re out of pellets or not. You can carry pellets at a maximum of 20 pounds, with the digital thermostat ensuring the pellets are being used properly. This saves you loads of cash and gives you smoking food simultaneously without wasting time in refilling pellets.

The Camp Chef PG24S uses three cleanup and maintenance systems. The Ash Cup Clean Out System collects leftover ash in a cup for easy cleanup. The Grease Management System instantly drains grease into a bucket for easy disposal. Finally, the Pellet Purge System helps you clean out pellets from your auger with ease. Cleaning up has never been so easy.
Most pellet smokers aren't so good at searing. Once again the clever folks at Camp Chef address this pellet predicament with an optional LP gas sear burner that can be added onto current Camp Chef SmokePro pellet grills by removing the right side shelf and using the existing hardware to mount the burner. This baby gets HOT! The 16,000 BTU burner range is 480° F Low to 900° F High - fantastic for reverse seared steaks. Cook the steaks low and slow in the smoker at 225° F until the meat probe signals the internal temp is about 110° F, then slap them onto the sear box to finish. Flip like you've never flipped before and don't walk away because it won't be there long before a beautiful brown crust forms and the interior meat climbs to the delicious Chef's Temp range of 130° to 135° F. If you have a grill that hits high searing temps, this option that runs a couple hundred bucks is unnecessary, but if you don't - Click here to get your crazy hot Sear Box!
Time to get down go over the financials. The Camp Chef SmokePro DLX has an MSRP of $699. The side Sear Box goes for $249. The exact model I have costs about as much as a large Kamado, alone. Most kamado grills require a number of accessories on top of the base price of the grill itself. The price point for the Camp Chef is right about middle of the pack among the big names of this type of grill.

The SmokePro SG is one of the lucky two pellet grills to feature Camp Chef’s relatively new Slide & Grill technology. As we stated earlier, this innovative technology allows you to switch from low heat smoking mode to direct flaming on high heat for serious grilling business. You can make this transition through the simple pull of a knob. This combined with the more-than-generous cooking space of the SmokePro SG means you can cook a ton of food in one go. A word of caution though – make sure to clean the drip tray thoroughly before opening up the firebox for direct heat access. This will prevent fat in the drip tray from reacting with the open fire and literally send your food up in flames.
The souped up Ortech style, notched dial controller not only provides thermostatic, set it and forget it cooking, but also has a dual LED readout that toggles between your set cooking temp and internal meat temp monitored by a stainless steel meat probe included with the unit. In addition to notched temp settings of 175F to 400F degrees, the controller has "Shutdown", "Feed", "High", "Lo Smoke", and "Hi Smoke" options. Our temperature tests indicated Lo Smoke temp is about 175 and Hi Smoke about 210. So what's the big difference between 175 and lo smoke, and 225 and hi smoke? Camp Chef says there are slight differences in the settings, mostly in the auger timing. In the 2 smoke settings the auger allows pellets to smolder more than burn.
Rec Tec has always been known for making advanced Rec Tec wood pellet grills coming in at a higher price. However, some of the popular models come in smaller sizes, like Trailblazer 340 or Bullseye 380. However, compared to their capacities and features, the products in our top ten lists would be better choices. So, among its products, the RecTec Bull 700 is the only one that falls in our Honorable Mentions.
The Woodwind SG is fueled by hardwood pellets generating heat and smoke, infusing your food with a savory wood fire taste that’ll make your taste buds sing. With grill temperature settings from 160°F to 500°F, and the included Sear Box that reaches up to 900° F, you can expect perfect results, whether you’re grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, braising, barbecuing, or even searing. When you’re finished, cleanup is a breeze thanks to Camp Chef's patented ash clean-out cup system. No Camp Chef competitor has an easier ash clean-up process.
One of Camp Chef’s latest innovations, the SmokePro SG was developed based on customer feedback of previous pellet grills. As a result, it offers everything you would love in a pellet grill. From a smart smoke technology that gives you full control over cooking temperature that ranges between 160F and 500F, to Camp Chef’s very own patented ash cleanout system, this grill has it all. It is also the only other model aside from the SGX model to feature slide and grill technology.
We were surprised to see that the pellet grill was WiFi-compatible. Usually, grills come with basic remotes, but this one comes with a digital WiFi controller. It allows you to control and monitor your cooking through an app on your iOS or Android phone. We found this convenient, since we didn’t have to get up to check on our grill every few minutes. This is probably why it’s one of the top pellet grills in the market.
Before anything else, we will discuss what we found to be the best feature of the SmokePro SG – its grilling area. Offered in the form of an upper rack area of 382 square in and lower rack area of 429 square in, the SmokePro SG has a massive 811 square inches of grilling space. This number is matched only by its counterparts the LUX & SGX Camp Chef pellet grills, and surpassed by the SmokePro XXL. But, that is not the only part worth mentioning about this pellet grill. You know how an extra grilling rack can sometimes be more of a nuisance than a blessing by either, getting in the way, being hard to reach, or only performing a solitary function like just warming? Well, that is not something you will go through with the SmokePro SG.

However, with a pellet smoker, you can ensure that new pellets are being fed into the fire automatically, ensuring that it burns for longer and while it burns, it imparts with its flavors. It doesn’t need to be soaked and fed into a burning pile of coal to work. Above that, sawdust, when separated by the heat and being burned, gets a larger surface area to burn with and thus sends out a bigger burst of flavor per pellet.

With a temperature probe for the meat inside the chamber, this allows you to keep an eye on the temperature of your meat without opening the grill. Nothing ruins a brisket or roast faster than the griller who constantly fiddles with the meat on the grill. Opening the chamber lets the heat out and that can quickly make for some tough meat. This handy feature takes the guesswork out of how ready your meal is, helping you get the best outcome.
While the Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett Pellet Grill is compatible with most iOS and Android devices, I want to stress, check the compatibility of your device with the grill before purchasing because it would suck to buy this grill only to find out that this feature is not compatible. Also, if you do not plan on using the grill on some elevated surface, the legs are not tall so the grill sits close to the ground. Regardless, this is a GREAT smoker: your meat will come out tender and juicy with that authentic BBQ taste we all love! Neither of these cons effect the quality of your BBQ and both can be worked around.
Bonus features- the upper shelf, the included thermometer probe, and the stainless kit. I totally understand the benefit of having an included secondary shelf in the grill. It’s awesome for things like hot dogs, stuffed mushrooms, etc. but I don’t use it a ton and sometimes have to remove it before doing taller things like turkeys, beer can chickens, hams, prime ribs, etc. I’m glad it is there for when I do need it and love that it’s removable for when I don’t. The built in thermometer probe is a super cool feature, allowing you to check the temperature of the meats on the grill with a push of a button on the control panel. Internal meat temperature monitoring is a huge deal and can contribute to a way better grilling experience, but I am a collector of thermometers (seriously, I have at least 10) so this wasn’t a make or break it feature for me. If you don’t have a thermometer, this is a sweet little bonus! Finally, the stainless kit. It looks pretty, It matches the sear box. People love stainless. For me, I find stainless steel is just a little harder to keep clean than a black grill. This is basically just my OCD self not wanting to scrub for fingerprints or water spots every time I use it. So, if you like stainless? You’ll love it. The thing looks slick, no doubt.

Traeger TFB42LZBC Grills Lil Tex Elite 22 Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker – With a price tag of $50 less than that of the SmokePro SG, the Traeger offers more or less the same features including a 22lb large hopper and a digital controller that allows you to maintain precise temperatures during use. However, it lacks this grill’s large cooking space, and the slide & grill technology, which in our opinion are the two features that take the SmokePro SG from being just another pellet grill to a premier product.
These food grade wood pellets contain only the best and the pure compressed sawdust from hardwood and are sometimes added with natural vegetable oils, perfectly safe and healthy for your food. However, the carbon in the soot and ashes that fly off the firebox can get embedded into the body of the food, which can get inside your body. The good news is problems such as these can be easily avoided if you can keep your smoker clean.
The Woodwind SG, now at RC Willey, doesn’t just make grilling easier—it also makes it more delicious. Use the new Slide and Grill Technology for an even more diverse grilling experience by grilling on direct flame. Your Woodwind SG is fueled by premium hardwood pellets that generate heat and smoke—infusing your food with a savory wood fire taste that’ll make your taste buds sing. The Woodwind houses our largest hopper capacity meaning you can cook fall-off-the-bone ribs, even longer. With grill temperature settings from 160°F to 500°F and the included Sear Box that reaches up to 900° F, you can achieve perfect results, whether you’re grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, braising, barbecuing, or even searing. And when you’re finished cooking, cleanup is a breeze with our patented Ash Cleanout System.
This smoker has dual-LED temperature displays- one is for the internal cooking temperature while the other is to tell you the temperature of the food kept inside it. Selecting the desired temperature or smoke settings on this model can be done with ease. It automatically dispenses the pellets as they are required, which helps keep the smoker efficient and aids in optimal utilization of pellets. Additionally, this is also what helps maintain the desired temperature so that you can set the smoker to the required setting and relax while it does the rest for you. The pellet hopper used in it has a large capacity, so you can spend less time refilling and more time smoking your favorite meat.
Listen guys, I know $899 is a lot of coin for a grill. But, compared to a lot of other grills in this price range on the market I feel like the Woodwind has the features, durability, and a 3 year warranty that set it above the rest. I also put a lot of stock in the customer care and service that a company offers and I feel like Camp Chef stands behind their products. I think if your budget puts the Woodwind in your price range, you’d be hard pressed to find a grill that is more reliable and versatile.
It comes with plenty of new BBQ tricks that can’t be found on other grills. The developers designed it keeping the idea of functionality as well as fashion in mind. It uses wood granules purely derived from natural wood pellets as fuel. This is particularly important to give your barbecue the flavor you long for. Its grills are built using porcelain and cast iron materials, which never add undesirable flavors to your barbecue.
As we’ve already said temperature control is the key to getting a moist succulent piece of meat. This pellet smoker comes with a built-in thermostatic control with a digital thermometer, so you can exclude any guesswork while barbecuing. If the temperature sensors detect a drop-in temperature they feed more wood pellets into the burner. This allows you to place your meat on the grill and then let the smoker do the work while you relax.
