It is my understanding that the lo/hi smoke settings are special settings that are engineered to produce more smoke than on the normal settings while still maintaining the set temperature. I can tell you from using the Woodwind that the Hi Smoke setting produces more smoke than most other pellet grills I have used and maintains 225°F at the same time. The Lo Smoke setting maintains about 180°F while producing plenty of smoke.
Igniter: An igniting rod, heated up to a red hot level, ignites wood pellets as they fall inside the firebox. A cooling fan blows air into the pellet smoker from behind the pellet auger to prevent heat backdraft, while the fan underneath the firebox fans the flame – distributing heat evenly throughout the smoker. This heat is used to smoke and slow cook food in the smoker to give it the best flavors possible.
This smoker offers a massive 560 cubic inches of grilling area with a large-capacity pellet hopper. Even though it’s the perfect starter grill, it’s still packed with plenty of extras that even the pro chefs will enjoy. If the grilling space isn’t enough, the removable upper racks can be turned into extra cooking space. The smokestack behind the unit can also be converted into a prep area.
Novices: Do you consider yourself a novice with a smoker grill? If so have no shame, in fact, look at me, I started as a novice too! Realistically, no one becomes a geek in 2 weeks of studying or research. So as a beginner you must look for an easy to use smoker grill. Well, the primary concept of a pellet smoker lies in its easy to use features. Set it and forget represents the motto and the main aspect you crave, right?
Most old timers will tell you that a buildup of soot and grease will improve the taste of your food. This does not prove true, in fact, it’s not good for you and can even be dangerous. At Grills Forever we want your grilling experience to represent a safe one. Therefore, before any cooking session, always clean your grill to optimize its performance and prevent any off-flavors. Check the grease pans or collectors before smoking, because the collector could be full and over flow, starting a fire. If there is a grease chute, then clean it for sure.
My family and I moved into a new home in December. I own a dozen grills, but the only one I had access to at the new house when we first moved in was my old kettle. It was snowing so of course I was grilling. I slathered some ribs with some jerk seasoning and slapped them on the kettle. I hadn’t cooked on that grill in at least 5 years so I’d forgotten how much I had to fiddle with it. I was so used to setting up the kamado and not having to check on anything except the temp of the meat for the entire cook. Well, I went out to check on my ribs and I had the vents open to much and I burnt them pretty bad. I don’t have the time or inclination to stand over a grill and keep tweaking vents and air flows and adding smoke wood and moving the meat around, etc. When I got my first kamado, I actually missed that aspect, but now my schedule and responsibilities (e.g. my four kids all 8 years and younger) don’t allow me to do that.
Most mid to high tier Camp Chef pellet smokers have the hopper cleanout and purge feature. The woodwind follows this trend as well, allowing you to transition between differently flavored pellets with ease. All you have to do is open a little trap door to empty the hopper, so there is no need to go through the tedious task of changing fuel by hand.
Consistency is the key to having the best results. If you want to make a tender brisket, your cooking temperature should be close to 250 F during the entire 12-hour cooking period. The control board is responsible for precision. There are three types of controllers – PID multi-position, non-PID one-touch, and 3-position. Check out the different types of controllers for the one that is right for you.
Traeger Junior Elite: The Traeger Junior Elite Wood Pellet Grill is another great alternative from a brand name company. However, you’ll find that with only 300 sq. in. of available space it’s quite compact. It does however come with a cover which might offset some of the cost of having to buy a separate meat thermometer if you want to go that route.
This is the best part of the SmokePro LUX especially since you will use roughly the same amount of pellets in a single cooking session that you would with much smaller models like the SmokePro SE and STX. Except this larger model is just better given the increased amount of food you get out of it. Like all Camp Chef pellet grills, this LUX version uses an automated auger and fan to deliver just the right amount of fuel and oxygen to ensure pellets do not burn out too fast.
Competition: If you are buying a smoker for participating in any competition, then pellet smokers are your best choice. Gas or electric smoker grills are not allowed in any competition as they are using automation. Though you are getting temperature control and electronic start in pellet smoker it is accepted in competition. This pellet smoker review will point out the ones best for a competition.
Before anything else, we will discuss what we found to be the best feature of the SmokePro SG – its grilling area. Offered in the form of an upper rack area of 382 square in and lower rack area of 429 square in, the SmokePro SG has a massive 811 square inches of grilling space. This number is matched only by its counterparts the LUX & SGX Camp Chef pellet grills, and surpassed by the SmokePro XXL. But, that is not the only part worth mentioning about this pellet grill. You know how an extra grilling rack can sometimes be more of a nuisance than a blessing by either, getting in the way, being hard to reach, or only performing a solitary function like just warming? Well, that is not something you will go through with the SmokePro SG.

The Woodwind legacy lives and everyone knows that a classic never really dies. That's why Camp Chef rereleased their first Woodwind model with Sear Box as the Woodwind Classic with Sear Box. With digital temperature control, the Woodwind does all the work for you. All you have to do is turn it on, set the temperature, and let it work while you play.
Whenever you want to smoke with a pellet smoker, you will have to make a choice: What type of wood pellets should I use? Well, the answer may sound simple – whichever flavor you like the best – but might be pretty difficult if you’re smoking for the first time. Unfortunately, the only way to know which flavor you like most is to try them all at least once and then decide upon which one floats your boat.
The grill is plated with beautiful stainless steel that gives the grill a refined and impressive look. The huge cooking area includes 570 square inches of surface area. That’s enough to hold 20 burgers or 4 rib racks! It also contains a second warming rack and bottom shelf that provides the grill stability and extra storage. Additionally, the legs are built with extreme thickness giving the grill a grounded base. The caster wheels add portability to the grill so you can find that perfect place in the backyard.
So, when their patent expired in 2006, large companies capitalized on that one and Traeger began facing cut-throat competitions. Within two years, a few companies had already begun producing some of the best pellet grills with more advanced designs and features. By 2014, around 27 companies had already penetrated the market and newer brands were coming out almost every month. Now, with so many companies already in the market, some of them are creating strategic alliances with other brands producing different grilling equipment.

This grill is mounted on a bracket with a sawhorse design with wheels that provide it mobility in all terrains. It has a hopper capacity of 18 pounds but it’s enough to continuously cook and smoke food in its 380 sq. inches of cooking area. The SmokePro SG is one of the lucky two pellet grills to feature Camp Chef’s relatively new Slide & Grill technology. As we stated earlier, this innovative technology allows you to switch from low heat smoking mode to direct flaming on high heat for serious grilling business. You can make this transition through the simple pull of a knob. This combined with the more-than-generous cooking space of the SmokePro SG means you can cook a ton of food in one go. A word of caution though – make sure to clean the drip tray thoroughly before opening up the firebox for direct heat access. This will prevent fat in the drip tray from reacting with the open fire and literally send your food up in flames.
I bought a Woodwind, not from your recommendations I have smoked on it less that 10 times, bought July 2017, the last two times the smoker after 45 minutes loses temp and drops to under 100 degrees, went through shutdown procedures, started again same thing after 45 minutes loss heat at 275 degrees to under 100 so far not sure if it is worth the $900 spent, not happy looking at the other models now, maybe just stick to the barbecue!
The sear grill is used to create caramelized crusts on meats such as steaks or sausages, for poultry and for fish too. To sear properly very high temperatures are required and with this sear grill capable of up to 900° F you will have no difficulty in doing so. It is also fun to use the sear grill to create the crosshatch marks which make every piece of BBQ look that extra bit more appetizing.
The Camp Chef Woodwind SG model has a 22 pound hopper, 811 square inches of cooking space (more than the REC TEC), a chute that allows you to easily remove your pellets from the hopper for changing flavors, and 2 full-size cooking racks. It also has a knob on the left side that allows you to pull the flame deflector out of the way so the fire can shoot up closer to the rack giving you the ability to get a little char on something. As if this is not enough, it comes standard with a propane searbox attached to the right side where you can sear steaks, burgers, chicken, whatever you like, at around 900°F.
During unpacking, I noticed that several of the bare metal parts such as the grease drain pan were covered in oil and had to be wiped off with a paper towel. This is to prevent it from rusting during storage and shipping and is why it is extremely important to run the pellet grill for a couple of hours at normal smoking temperatures or a little higher before using it to cook food.
The SmokePro SE Pellet Grill brings award-winning BBQ to your back patio. Simply select the desired cooking temperature and let the smoker do the rest. Our Smart Smoke Technology maintains a consistent temperature range to produce as much smoke as possible. That means the best flavor possible. And at the end of the cookout, you’ll enjoy the easiest, quickest cleanout system in the industry. Instead of dismantling and cleaning your grill after every use, you can pull a lever and empty the ash out of the fire pot. In a few seconds, you’re ready for your next big barbecue. And it’s good thing too, because that smoky taste is going to keep everyone coming back for more.
