First off, the SG pellet grill features a tall cook chamber that offers plenty of space to accommodate both racks and still leave enough wiggle room for you to easily add and remove food items. Secondly, the SG simply has an amazing one-of-a-kind design. The upper rack easily slides out of the way for those times when you want full access to the lower grates. And get this, that functionality goes both ways as the lower level also splits into two smaller racks that can be removed to allow more heat to reach the upper grate.
The 4-burner LP gas grill is easy to use thanks to features such as an integrated ignition. If you’ve been around for a while, you know I can’t help myself when it comes to Camp Chef’s new releases. I’ve previously written both a Woodwind pellet grill review as well as the DLX Pellet Grill review. You can read each of those reviews and see my opinions on the overall construction quality and customer satisfaction. For this review, I am going to focus on my favorite new features that the SG pellet grill brings to the table (there are a lot!!) and how they can help you improve your overall grilling experience. Here are the stats for the SG and below I’ll talk you through some of my favorites.
Its digital-control, centrally placed oven gives you accurate cooking temperatures from 170 F to 600 F. The probe interface included can be programmed to cook and control the temperature with high precision. A steady burning flame is maintained by air forced into the chamber by the fan with the help of an electric ignition. The flowing air creates abundant convectional heat to bring out the best flavor of your grilled food.
Consistency is the key to having the best results. If you want to make a tender brisket, your cooking temperature should be close to 250 F during the entire 12-hour cooking period. The control board is responsible for precision. There are three types of controllers – PID multi-position, non-PID one-touch, and 3-position. Check out the different types of controllers for the one that is right for you.
Let’s start with the obvious… the size!! Compared to the DLX, this SG has a massive amount of grill grate real estate. Not only is there a larger main grill surface, there is also an included split second rack that doubles the usable grill space. Most grills offer a second warming rack, but it goes unused because it either doesn’t get enough heat or it simply gets in the way. The second rack on the SG totally solves both of those problems.
Wood pellet grill is a two-in-one mixture of a smoker and a grill. It doesn’t provide direct flame for your steaks or meat as a grill would which eliminates flare-ups. Since there’s no direct flame, searing meat isn’t an option and there’s a better choice if this is your desire. However, if you desire a great smoky flavor with an easy cooking process then a pellet smoker is an excellent choice.

I absolutely love the new Woodwind pellet grill. The new design with the thicker legs make this so sturdy, and I love having the caster wheels make it easy to move out of the garage to grill on my driveway. Arrived in perfect condition without any problems. I was up and smoking meat in no time! The Sear Box takes it to another level. Thanks Camp Chef for such an awesome smoker!
Looking for the ultimate in pellet grilling technology? The SmokePro SG has you covered. With an incredible 811 sq. in. of grilling space, dual temperature probes, digital LED display and a massive 22 pound pellet hopper the SmokePro SG is king of the castle. Even more it’s got the unique slide and grill technology and patented ash and hopper cleanouts for a superior grilling experience.

Personal review of the Traeger: The auger fed the pellets after the fire pot went out making a large pile up which caused it to catch fire and burn up my grill. I had to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames and prevent my house from catching fire. I sent Traeger the description of damages with photos. After much waiting and no response from the management team regarding my Traeger grill we gave up. The service team was very responsive but lacked any authority to make decisions to fix the grill. We worked with the service team for awhile having a different person each time respond and request information and photos that were already provided. Then, we got passed up to the management which is highly ineffective because we never heard from them, even after an email requesting an update. We really did like our Traeger grill and had high hopes that since it was under warranty and caught fire due to a failure we would have the grill repaired. Because of the terrible unresponsive service of Traeger we took our money and purchase a Green Mountain Grill.
2 comments. I am smoking a Brisket using the woodwind for the first time today. It’s 97 Deb outside. I was hoping this grill would hold a tighter temp range. I’m averaging at best 210 to 240 with it set at 225. I dii like a less smokier neat so I didn’t use low smoke. Is \_ 15 deg sound right? Also both temp prope read over 300 and one was in a cold brisket and the other I just left in outside ambient temp. Do you think I have a bad controller?
Big Horn’s largest available grill, the XL 1093 comes with a large cooking area of 1093 sq inches. With it’s low price tag of around $300 and a high cooking area, this product could have been a great choice for pellet smokers. However, we’d rather not suggest something that’s susceptible to rust and weather conditions to be kept outdoors at all times.
With its many luxurious features, the Rec Tec smoker has taken the smoking game to a whole new level! This smoker does not just cost a pretty penny,s it is worth a pretty penny: the Rec Tec is a feature-rich, durable smoker with a long life that offers a great, consistent cooking experience. I wanted to give this smoker a 6 out of 5! Here’s why we chose this as our Advanced Pick:
We love recommending and reviewing wood pellet smoker grills, but we also want you to get the most out of them once you purchase. Without proper care and maintenance, even the best pellet smoker is bound to have a shorter lifespan. Therefore, how you use your smoker and how you maintain it after use greatly determines how long it will serve you.  A little bit of work will go a long way to extending the life of your smoker. A thorough cleaning of the smoker should occur at least once a year. If you frequently use it, you should have it done at least three times a year. Buying quality pellets will extend its life as well.

Let’s chat about included features. Almost all pellet grills operate with a similar mechanism where an electrically powered auger feeds wood pellets into a firebox. The pellets are then ignited, producing smoke and heat. The Woodwind has consistently operated as advertised, every time I’ve used it, from the day I opened it. So what features really set it apart?

Bonus features- the upper shelf, the included thermometer probe, and the stainless kit. I totally understand the benefit of having an included secondary shelf in the grill. It’s awesome for things like hot dogs, stuffed mushrooms, etc. but I don’t use it a ton and sometimes have to remove it before doing taller things like turkeys, beer can chickens, hams, prime ribs, etc. I’m glad it is there for when I do need it and love that it’s removable for when I don’t. The built in thermometer probe is a super cool feature, allowing you to check the temperature of the meats on the grill with a push of a button on the control panel. Internal meat temperature monitoring is a huge deal and can contribute to a way better grilling experience, but I am a collector of thermometers (seriously, I have at least 10) so this wasn’t a make or break it feature for me. If you don’t have a thermometer, this is a sweet little bonus! Finally, the stainless kit. It looks pretty, It matches the sear box. People love stainless. For me, I find stainless steel is just a little harder to keep clean than a black grill. This is basically just my OCD self not wanting to scrub for fingerprints or water spots every time I use it. So, if you like stainless? You’ll love it. The thing looks slick, no doubt.
Personal review of the Traeger: The auger fed the pellets after the fire pot went out making a large pile up which caused it to catch fire and burn up my grill. The Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett smoker lets you get more than what you paid for. At a surprisingly low price, you get to have tons of great features that are sure to elevate your BBQ experience. For its price, we were quite surprised to see that it satisfied most of the features on our review. We tested over fifty products, and even the expensive ones were no match for this product. In terms of value per dollar, this product deserves the top spot.

let me be the first to say, i bought this smoker with the thought of never having to wake up and check a fire through the night. where that's true with this smoker, take into consideration that the hopper holds 18 pounds of pellets and uses about 3 pounds every hour. so make sure you plan accordingly when it comes to smoking meats, obviously put it on at night and set you and alarm to go off just before it runs out of pellets. other than that little problem i had to figure out the hard way, it's a great grill! my cousin thought it was the coolest thing he'd ever seen when we were grilling on it. also, i'd suggest a wireless thermometer (i bought mine from wal mart for about $20) for grilling or smoking. my burgers came out a little dry because i had never used a pellet grill. other than that, pellets are easier and cheaper to find and there's no worry about a flame going out. I love it!

It comes with some unique features, such as its proprietary “Sense-mate” technology that uses a thermal sensor to monitor the ambient temperature. If used in a cold weather, this grill fires up the turbo mode so you won’t have to wait for it to heat up before you start using it. It comes with “fan-only” mode to blow off the ash and automatically clean the grill once it has been shut off.
Typically, most portable grills would give up certain features just to maintain their portability, but this wood pellet grill from Traeger actually had more than what other top grills have to offer. Out of all of our features, it managed to tick 85% off the review. Its digital controls, versatile cooking features, and decent cooking space (perfect for outdoor adventures) all make it our best portable pick.

The final quality that pushed this grill from “another pellet grill” to the premier grill on my patio is the overall size and stature of the grill itself. These legs are like tree trunks. Thick, sturdy, and built to last. Just ask my husband, Todd. He was wheeling the grill around a corner for me and accidentally set one of the legs down on his toe. Whoops! His toe is fine, but he had many choice words to say about those thick legs. Haha.
Complete with a variety of spectacular features, the Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker redefines the whole concept of smoking. At a reasonable price, this smoker gives you more than what you paid for. It offers top technology-rich features that ensure consistent smoking for that great smoky flavor. Plus, many customers – including ourselves – have attested to its durability. This smoker will serve you without failure for a very long time.
Now, the best pellet grills come with more advanced features like auto-ignition using igniting rods, Wi-Fi Support, automatic turn on/off, and much more. One of the key safety features added by pellet smokers (designed by Green Mountain Grills), is a cooling fan to cool off the grill after it has been turned off. Even the shape of the body has been changed to have peaked lids so that it can accommodate turkeys and other kinds of roasts. Some come with multiple levels of racks for warming and cooling.
Joe Traeger designed and developed pellet grills back in 1985 and he patented the design one year after. But these didn’t go into full commercial production until 1988. Because of the patented design, Traeger held a monopoly in the pellet grill market for twenty years. But being a small family-run company, they did not diversify and kept supplying their products only to a select network of stores.
We were surprised to see that the pellet grill was WiFi-compatible. Usually, grills come with basic remotes, but this one comes with a digital WiFi controller. It allows you to control and monitor your cooking through an app on your iOS or Android phone. We found this convenient, since we didn’t have to get up to check on our grill every few minutes. This is probably why it’s one of the top pellet grills in the market.
Words like Grilling, Barbecuing and Smoking are often used interchangeably by us. However, when looking at them from a grill master’s point of view, there are some subtle methodological differences among these three: One is done with the lid up, BBQ is done in a closed circulation with the lid down, and smoking is a slow cooking process in a closed circulation.

All pellet smokers accumulate ash, which must be removed at some point to allow for good combustion in the burner pot. This task can be messy and cumbersome but the Woodwind pellet grill makes cleaning so much easier with its Ash Cleanout System. The ash removal lever is found under the firepot, and all you have to do is simply pull it to clean out your pellet grill.
Z Grills Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker: At a very similar price, the Z grill option makes for a great alternative. It’s got a 22% larger cooking area and a fully enclosed under grill storage shelf with caster wheels. It also comes with a 20 pound pellet hopper for longer cooking times. What it’s missing is an included meat probe as well as the patented ash cleanouts found on all Camp Chef Pellet Grills. It also won’t get quite as hot with a 450 degree max temperature.

Not only is there a larger main grill surface, there is also an included split second rack that doubles the usable grill space. Most grills offer a second warming rack, but it goes unused because it either doesn’t get enough heat or it simply gets in the way. The second rack on the SG totally solves both of those problems.
The Woodwind SG doesn’t just make grilling easier—it also makes it more delicious. Use the new Slide & Grill Technology for an even more diverse grilling experience by direct flame broiling your food. Your Woodwind SG is fueled by premium hardwood pellets that generate heat and smoke—infusing your food with a savory wood fire taste that’ll make your taste buds sing. The Woodwind houses our largest hopper capacity meaning you can cook fall-off-the-bone ribs, even longer. With grill temperature settings from 160°F to 500°F and the included Sear Box that reaches up to 900° F, you can achieve perfect results, whether you’re grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, braising, barbecuing, or even searing. And when you’re finished cooking, cleanup is a breeze with our patented Ash Cleanout System.
I have had a Traeger Junior Elite for 4 years. In that time I have used it < 50 times. I have replaced a fan motor, a fuse, and now I have been trying to get a thermometer replaced. First time, the service guy dropped the ball and never sent it. Second time- the thermometer got sent around to multiple post offices. Third time, never got to me- apparently they sent it to the wrong address. Fourth time- still waiting. It's been 5 weeks now, and I cannot get the part, and have no idea if the part will fix the grill. Everyone in service has been polite, but incompetent as well. I have had 2 flash fires in the grill from the auger pushing too many pellets into the hot pot, the temperature fluctuates wildly. Save yourself the frustration: avoid Traeger at all costs!
Grilling for a large group of people, such as family and friends, is possible with this grill through the ultra-wide grilling area, so everyone will get their bite once the cooking is done. To get the best grilling performance, Camp Chef Pellets are recommended since they produce better and convenient grilling heat. The pellets are pure wood, so it is assured that your flavor won’t be affected in any way.
Most mid to high tier Camp Chef pellet smokers have the hopper cleanout and purge feature. The woodwind follows this trend as well, allowing you to transition between differently flavored pellets with ease. All you have to do is open a little trap door to empty the hopper, so there is no need to go through the tedious task of changing fuel by hand.

It features tons of built-in features, designed to facilitate the cooking process. The price on Amazon is much higher than the other smokers of similar types, but Camp Chef PG24 is a high-quality pellet smoker for cooks who are serious about getting the real taste of barbecues from their smoker grills. It is worth every penny. Let’s look at its amazing features.

Set it and forget it. It does not require you to stay while the food is being cooked as you can set a timer and temperature so you can do other things, like prepare the side dishes or drink beer with friends while the grill is doing its job. Most pellet grills use electronic controls to regulate the grilling according to your preferences. You have a choice to choose the level of smoke aside from choosing your desired temperature.

Most old timers will tell you that a buildup of soot and grease will improve the taste of your food. This does not prove true, in fact, it’s not good for you and can even be dangerous. At Grills Forever we want your grilling experience to represent a safe one. Therefore, before any cooking session, always clean your grill to optimize its performance and prevent any off-flavors. Check the grease pans or collectors before smoking, because the collector could be full and over flow, starting a fire. If there is a grease chute, then clean it for sure.
We are going to take the guesswork out of it for you. Here at Grills Forever we have seared, smoked and grilled on grill after grill so you can have the latest information on what smokers are the best pellet smoker grills. These best pellet smokers can sear and cook the most delicious foods, they are easy to control and convenient to use. We took all these features and more into consideration while compiling the top 10 wood pellet smoker review.

Cleaning up after grilling is every cook’s dreaded part of the process, but this pellet grill simplifies that. Its warming rack comes with a patented ash-catcher system, the Ash Can Cleanout System, that allows for an easier cleanup of the unit. Additionally, it also features a grease drip disposal system that comes with a bucket. You won’t have to waste precious time cleaning up afterward!

The grill offers one of the best sear boxes on the market. It can reach up to 900 degrees F giving your food a crisp and perfect sear. The 16,000 BTU stainless steel burner also contains a built-in ignition. The sear box offers grill masters another state of the art tool in their arsenal. While the sear box is an awesome feature, it bumps up the price compared to the PG24.
Have you reviewed at all the Grilla Silverbac? If so, does it not make your list because it isn’t as good a quality as those you have picked? I mean, when I look online for reviews of those who have bought them I haven’t found anyone disappointed with theirs, but perhaps they haven’t been out as long to have a track record? I’m so confused at this point as to which to buy with PID or no PID (some say smoke does better without one), thickness of metal, etc.
The inside of its chamber works like a convection oven, which means that there are no cold and hot spots on the grill. This lets the meat be cooked evenly and produces the tastiest food. Unlike other barbecue smokers, this one also has a meat probe. While a temperature display only gives an idea of the inside temperature, a meat probe is the most accurate way to know the temperature of the meat that is being cooked. So you know exactly when to pull the meat off the grill.
However, the manufacturers have made the cleaning process very simple in this smoker grill. Basically, there are 2 types of dirt that a user deals with while smoking. Firstly the grease and oil for which, as mentioned earlier, the design of this smoker is done in such a way that all the grease and oil drains out of the system into a bucket. Secondly, there is pellet ash, for which the users are provided with an easy access to the burn pot and there is also a trap door with the help of which the unit can be cleaned without getting into the messy grease and ashes. There is also a knob which you can pull to easily empty all the ash on the can.
